November 6, 2008 Just wanted to share a few images from a contemplative walk home after a photo session. These are dahlias and sunflowers from our neighborhood’s community garden.

November 5, 2008 There’s something incredibly moving to me about taking images of beautiful women that will stand the test of time. I hope that women who do our boudoir sessions keep their prints and folios forever.

I love these three images together.
All boudoir images always used with permission.
November 5, 2008 One of my favorite people, Anne Ruthmann, shares some solid tips on how to get your wedding published by a magazine. [ source ]
To all of the couples out there who are itching to be featured in a magazine… here’s what magazine editors are looking for:
Beautiful, clean photography that’s not overly photoshopped with great lighting, composition, and attention to detail (ie. get a great photographer and your wedding will look fantastic no matter what!) UNIQUE details! If you’ve seen it before, they’ve probably seen it before a hundred times! For unique florals or decor- let your florist go wild with their imagination! Give them a color palette or just a few words to describe your personal style and let them interpret it as they see fit! Give your vendors creative freedom and they will create beautiful work for you! Different locations! At this point, the magazines have pretty much published all of the “normal” wedding venues. They’re craving a different spin on the wedding day- so think outside of the “box” like Jessica & Ben did! Choose a place you love, that says something about who you are as a couple. You’d be pretty surprised at the places you can have a wedding these days!
Anika London has a wonderful video montage from a recent wedding. I love the melange of moments that somehow tells me so much about the wedding even though the film is only about 3 minutes long. [ link ] I can’t wait until I get to work closely with a film colleague to document a wedding instead of finding the hired video team working against our work at a wedding. Anika also has some fantastic photo booth images with a moustached bride. [ link ]
Speaking of photo booths, I love the humor of a crazybooth.
November 4, 2008 A few more favorites from my portrait swap with Ashley O’Dell.

And here’s the feedback I just got from her:
omg rachel! these are the best photos ever taken of me! no joke! they are amazing.

It’s always a delight to have the opportunity to photograph people you have met at another wedding. Jake is the younger brother of Dave (of Rima-Dave, Inc.). I had a chance to meet them at Rima-Dave’s wedding almost exactly one year ago. Now that Jake and Amy are officially engaged, Rima and Dave gifted them with a portrait session. Since Amy and Jake are both teachers, we had to wait until we could coordinate a time that would work with everybody’s hectic weekday schedules.
I really wanted to do a shoot at one of the schools, but they weren’t so into that idea. Then their idea to do our portrait session at a movie theatre (Jake looovvves movies and used to work at a theatre) didn’t pan out, as we ran into ‘corporate policies.’ I still wanted to sneak one in even if it involved actually going to a movie, but we shifted gears and decided to go for Hannah Williams Playground in Wayland MA instead.
I have to admit that I was a tiny bit skeptical. There are some places that people think are going to look better in photos than they actually do. My wedding list of portrait no-nos includes:
and call me grumbly, but I kind of thought I was going to have to add to my engagement session list of no-nos with this playground idea. BUT, this playground was not only AWESOME, but it brought out Jake’s playful personality. It was a ton of fun to shoot through tire swings, around castle-wood structures, and in the beautiful tree-thick park next to the play structures. Good call, Amy!
It’s a pleasure to be able to learn about all of these unique locations and special places in the Boston area. There’s a whole lot outside the city that I have yet to explore. I’m looking forward to my next adventure with amazing people.
November 4, 2008 I was recently in NYC for a friend’s wedding, and had also scheduled an engagement session in Brooklyn on our way back to Boston. We had a last-minute cancellation for the photo session, but I had already contracted a friend to come into the city to help me out with filming the session so I didn’t want to let the opportunity go to naught. Luckily, I was able to find Piccola via Model Mayhem and arrange to meet her and hot Italian boyfriend Alessandro in Central Park at a location I had been wanting to explore since I saw Susan Stripling’s shoot there.

Piccola is Alessandro’s adoring name for his diminutive model-girlfriend Stephanie. They met one another literally on the street (think passing by, both looking back, going to meet, then walking away, then coming back), and theirs is a true NYC love story. You have to hear them tell it to get the full effect.

November 4, 2008 I’ve been into portrait swaps lately, because photographers often don’t have enough quality photos of themselves and their families. Megan of Perspectives Photography asked me to help document her pregnancy, and so we agreed to do a sort of hip urban maternity session. We met up at Hi-Lo Foods in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and utilized their colorful murals and aisles for some shots. Then we walked around the surrounding few blocks for some more street shots.

I love doing maternity portraits. I think pregnant women are so beautiful!

Grace, a fellow photographer, recently moved to the Boston area and introduced herself to me awhile ago. She’s my new sidekick on portrait sessions and I have enjoyed getting to know her! We did a quick mini-shoot after some family sessions at Wingaersheek Beach (Gloucester, Massachusetts). There were a couple of spots I really wanted to shoot at the beach but didn’t get a chance because we were photographing small kids with a short attention span. Look at those muted colors! I’d love to do a portrait session with a toddler playing in the tall grasses.

November 3, 2008 So, yesterday was our Boston boudoir holiday promo and it was LOTS of fun! We met some really great women and took some really interesting and beautiful images. And I already got some feedback that made me laugh a lot.
Whoohoo! Can’t wait to see the photos. Thank you in advance for a Christmas gift that will be much more exciting to give him than a sweater.
