June 30, 2010“Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.” – Margaret Young

The past few years have been incredibly busy and full! I needed to take some personal time to pull back from photography and enjoy life more. 2010 so far has been restful and delicate, and I’ve enjoyed reading more books than ever before and exploring some new life habits. My goal for the year has been to “rediscover the lovely.” Now, six months into the year, I feel my sabbatical softly coming to a graceful end.
By the way, the photos above are from February, and were taken on 120 film in a plastic Holga camera. Aren’t they interesting and just a touch eccentric? Since May I have been working with serious analog film cameras and testing to see if I’d like to spend more of my time doing portraits in old-school style… and the answer is YES! There’s something wonderful and elusive about film.
(More on that soon, I helped photograph a wedding in Hollister California with 35mm and I’m excited to see the results.)

Amy and Jake are both teachers in the Boston area, so they thought it would be fun to do their engagement photo session at a local playground. I love the playful results!

This month in northern California, the roses are out in full force. I’m feeling inspired every time I glance over at the pots of blooms all over our little house.
It’s more difficult to use garden flowers in wedding arrangements because they’re unpredictable. They’re all different sizes and shades of lovely, and they open up seemingly by whim. Their life rhythms are adjustable based on weather patterns, and an untimely gust of wind might take out an entire crop.
It’s exactly these factors that make garden roses absolutely delightful. Something about the imperfections make them more desirable.
And… oh, the fragrance!

I photographed Anita’s wedding at their private residence in Palos Verdes, CA this past summer. What’s extra-special is that I photographed her sister Suzy’s wedding in the same house a few months prior. Someday I hope to photograph Bijan’s wedding as well, but he probably has a few years since he just started college this year. All three siblings are extremely close, and a delight to know. You should see them gang dance with the rest of their family on the dance floor!
I’m still secretly hoping for a bridal session with both Anita and Suzy sometime this year. They inspire me.
February 10, 2010There are some pretty interesting photos from an experimental bridal session at a horse farm over at fearlessbridals.com…

January 7, 2010For a truly original idea, consider the interactive art project Shawn and Owen Fowler had loved ones participate in their Port Ludlow, WA wedding. A friend sketched a drawing of three flowers on a canvas and then drew a grid over it, dividing the picture into symmetrical squares – one for every guest attending. During the reception, they propped the canvas on an easel on a table with acrylic paints and brushes (all a wedding gift from the artist), and asked family and friends to each fill in one box, then sign the sides. “Guests loved it!” says Shawn. “And now we all have a really special painting on our living room wall.”

December 10, 2009I’ve spent the last 10 hours printing discs and preparing packages. This weekend we’re packing up the office and closing up shop for the year.
Here’s an image from an engagement session in 2007. I think this photo actually changed the way I shoot – it was a breakthrough moment that taught me about light, shadows, and silhouettes (which became my signature shot in forthcoming years).

A couple of photos from our analog photo shoot today in Princeton, MA. The shoot was mostly film using holgas and my lomo fisheye camera, so it’s going to be a couple of weeks before we get to see the others.
November 5, 2009Remember Jenny, whose Pennsylvania got rained out in September? Well, we did some bridals at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline at the peak of the fall foliage. This combines two of my favorite things in the world – interesting woman in a pretty dress, and autumn color.
