in a field of weeds

Date June 29, 2008

MA destination wedding photographer

You know, I always mean to take whimsical photos in picturesque fields of weeds, but my dream was not yet realized until I met Ed and Crystal. They were kind enough to let me grab them on the way out from Robin and Erik’s MA farmhouse wedding.

badass people in a field

I love how Ed manages to be both badass and slightly goofy/in-love at the same time… and that sassy Crystal seems to be his perfect match! I also love that they didn’t flinch when I said “will you fulfill a dream of mine and go stand in those weeds for a second?”  hehehe.

juxtaposition.002- Tiffany

Date June 29, 2008

Today I had the pleasure of hanging out with recently married Tiffany and Colin. When we discussed unique locations for the shoot, Tiffany suggested Boston Sand and Gravel. I couldn’t have been happier to have a chance to use such a Boston institution — right off the highway literally under the Z bridge, Boston Sand and Gravel has been large and in charge for many years. I made some phone calls and was able to talk with one of the owners who not only fielded the request, which must have seemed strange (”you want to do what? where?”) but connected me with one of the plant overseers, Alan, who was so cool to show us around the site for an hour today. The staff on plant today were all friendly and kind and accommodating to us. I heart Boston Sand and Gravel - they rock!

Thanks guys!

While I don’t have any photos from there to show yet, I do want to show one of the last photos from the day during our stint in Boston’s Chinatown. Tiffany wore four different dresses on her wedding day, and I love this bright pink halter dress! Isn’t she a total hottie?

what he saw / what she saw

Date June 26, 2008

In going through the photos from the Wooster wedding today, I came across a really interesting photo pair. My husband Ali was shooting wih me, as he is wont (want?) to do for our destination work… he gets the straight-on angle stuff and I go for the more obscure details of the day. During one of the toasts:

I didn’t bother editing myself out of that first one that he took because it more proves my point. I had moved behind Katie and Victor because I didn’t like that the kitchen doors were propped open behind them. And I discovered that by going back there I could get their reactions, body language, and the father that was giving the toast. Ali covered our bases by getting the front view.

He also got a photo I think is kind of funny because it perfectly illustrates the craziness that is getting ready for a group photos with everyone from the wedding. In this case Katie and Vic both love an audience, so they were orchestrating the group. And there I am, busily shooting away and sticking my butt out!

And one more, just because I like the photo so much but it has no other place. This is a random detail shot from the wedding, at a point when the lights went out and they couldn’t figure out how to get them back on during the dancing. I love the way the light goes through the glass and the liquid.

destination: Wooster, Ohio

This is just a tease for Katie and Vic, who keep harassing me for their wedding photos.

Dan & Diana

Date June 26, 2008

My good friends Dan and Diana were at a recent Newport, Rhode Island wedding. Dan, who is a pastor of Highrock Brookline, was the officiant for the ceremony! Aren’t they cute together?

a little bit emotional

Date June 25, 2008

Can I be honest here and say that’s it’s been a tough couple of days in the land of mergeweddings.com. Nothing catastrophic has happened; I’ve just felt like keeping up with daily tasks has kept me running constantly without rest.

Jennifer sent me a link to this guy’s project. I’ve seen excerpts before, and each little dance has its own degree of amazingness, but the final montage is incredible. I just sat here watching it for the first time and it made me cry!

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

Whenever something makes me cry, I like to try to figure out why. I ask myself… am I upset? Happy? In awe? Usually, exhaustion and frustration can actually be a helpful thing as it lessens my own ability to protect myself from real feelings. We all protect ourselves! This time, Matt connected with things deep inside me… a desire to bring such joy into other people’s lives in all different environments. It might sound kind of cheesy, but this montage is like the life I want to lead, personally and professionally having the opportunity to learn about and photograph people all around the world.

If nothing else, watch the video for the Papua New Guinea guys, and also the wheelchair guy in the crowd.

I’m working on scheduling girls for the bridals project right now, which is tough with my wedding, boudoir photography, and travel schedules… but I got the best email a minute ago from one of my girls and this kind of thing makes everything worthwhile:

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

Oh, Rachel, I’m SO excited.  Meeting you has been so good for me, my soul, my happiness, my relationship (I can’t WAIT to see his face when I surprise him with your [boudoir] album and beautiful artistic photos!!!), my confidence– my LIFE.  You = so awesome, I can’t even begin to tell you.

Jeff + Jaimie = loooove

Date June 23, 2008

I so enjoyed going through the photos from Jaimie and Jeff’s May 31 Boston wedding at Park Street Church. Those two are fantastic together, and show a huge range of expressions. I especially appreciate Jeff’s ability to go from calm and serious to goofy. Check out the carriage ride photos for some great interaction! Here’s one of my favorites from the wedding. I love the looks on their faces.

I had a chance to hang out with Jeff and Jaimie tonight at their new fancy schmancy place in Beacon Hill and showed them my ‘artist selects’ (the images that automatically play in the main gallery). I love hearing people’s first reactions to their wedding photos. For Jeff, he said he thinks he looks the best of any photos in his entire life. I consider that quite a compliment. Yay!

Here are my favorites:

I have to throw in a vendor recommendation. Their flowers were beautiful, and what I appreciated the most is that Gregory is completely passionate about his work. He excitedly brought in the bouquets and talked her through the flower choices… talking about how May 31 was right in the middle of the short season for a couple of flowers (’bridal veil’ and another one) so that anytime they see those flowers, they’re theirs. I like Gregory O’Brien and can only assume he puts out consistently wonderful work. If you’re looking for a quality florist, check out highly talented artist Greg O’Brien via Gregory’s Flowers (781-246-1230 - gregorysgardencenter@verizon.net).

boudoir thanks

Date June 23, 2008

My husband LOVED the album and dvd. I gave him the album on our wedding night. He was totally speechless… the only words he could manage to say were, “Oh my God, you are SO beautiful.” I showed him the DVD on the first night of our honeymoon. I’m SO glad I ordered the DVD! He watched it every night of our honeymoon! :) Thanks so much to you and Tricia (he thanks you too!)!
