Rachel & David

June 1, 2010

Whenever I am in the same place as previous year wedding clients, I try to do a mini portrait session so they have an updated photo together. Although we only had a few minutes together during my recent visit to Austin, Texas I am really enamored with these portraits out in a field next to their apartment.

Rachel and David were married in Dallas in 2007.

will you marry me sign

I am having SO MUCH FUN going through my personal photo archives. Right now I am nearing the end of 2007, which was a huge year for me — the photography business was booming and I was able to leave my part-time admin job at MIT, Ali and I were dating seriously (he proposed in July on a massive roadtrip using the sign above), and I was still whimsical enough to have fun most of the time. 2007 is also the year my photography started to have a technical consistency that holds true to the way I see the world.

2007 was also the first year I went to Hawaii. Hawaii is a magical place – I loved being in the sunshine and aloha spirit for a few weeks in December when the rest of my friends in Boston and family in Michigan were fending off piles of snow every morning. While I was in Oahu I got to spend some time with my friend Marina Miller, whose wedding photography business was starting to take off as well. Looking back over these bridal images she did of me in my very simple wedding dress I am seriously impressed with her sense of color and line. And I had fun with her on the shoot, which I’m sure you can tell from the photos. images ©2007 MARINA MILLER at REDHEARTPHOTO.COM hair and makeup by Elizabeth Uehara/ beautigoddess

behind-the-scenes at a july wedding

May 24, 2010

Popular wedding photographer Laura Ryan Moakley came to the Boston area to photograph this wedding with me. She drove all the way from Long Island, New York! The image of me on the left shows the way I work in a small hotel room (utilizing certain elements and angles to achieve artistry) and the image on the right is the shot I was working toward – showing off the detail of the shoes without including any room clutter. It’s neat how the dresses in the background add a certain flavor to Laura’s image, while I was using the dresses to filter the light to a much subtler effect. It’s so fun to have two photographers collaborating on a wedding commission.

Lowell MA wedding photographer

This wedding took place at Harbor of Hope Church, a mill conversion in Lowell Massachusetts, in July. I adore the old brick and converted purpose structures in Lowell.

It’s interesting to me how photos can bring back such specific memories; I remember sweat pouring down everyone’s faces as we did the photos. This was one of the more challenging days for photography, in the middle of the east coast summer, and yet everyone in this bridal party retained their sense of humor and worked hard to get some unforgettable images for Christina and Phil.

Look at that little cutie! Christina’s daughter was also the flower girl. She had fun all day long. I really appreciate the natural styling and dress, she looks gorgeous but not like someone’s trying to make her look older or more fashionable than would be age appropriate. Here’s to fresh, natural beauty!

Amy and Jake are both teachers in the Boston area, so they thought it would be fun to do their engagement photo session at a local playground. I love the playful results!

inspired by: garden roses

colorful garden roses

This month in northern California, the roses are out in full force. I’m feeling inspired every time I glance over at the pots of blooms all over our little house.

It’s more difficult to use garden flowers in wedding arrangements because they’re unpredictable. They’re all different sizes and shades of lovely, and they open up seemingly by whim. Their life rhythms are adjustable based on weather patterns, and an untimely gust of wind might take out an entire crop.

It’s exactly these factors that make garden roses absolutely delightful. Something about the imperfections make them more desirable.

And… oh, the fragrance!

I still LOVE this photo of Julia and Andrew. It takes my breath away. And it shows their real personalities, which brings a flood of happy memories back from their wedding day.

brothers and sisters at wedding

I photographed Anita’s wedding at their private residence in Palos Verdes, CA this past summer. What’s extra-special is that I photographed her sister Suzy’s wedding in the same house a few months prior. Someday I hope to photograph Bijan’s wedding as well, but he probably has a few years since he just started college this year. All three siblings are extremely close, and a delight to know. You should see them gang dance with the rest of their family on the dance floor!

I’m still secretly hoping for a bridal session with both Anita and Suzy sometime this year. They inspire me.

Erica & Adam : the book!

5x5 press print wedding album

I am so happy for Erica and Adam to have their little wedding book! This press-printed book measures 5×5, fits nicely in a bag or purse, and is just large enough to show off their wedding photos perfectly. Delightful!
